What Should I Do If My Phone Gets Wet?

Turn it off immediately. If the screen is already black, leave it off — don't press the power button to check if it still works, and don't plug it in to charge.

Don't put it in rice. It's a popular myth, but rice doesn't draw moisture out of a sealed device the way people assume, and rice dust can end up in the ports. A sealed bag with silica gel packets (the kind that come in shoe boxes or electronics packaging) is more effective if you're waiting before bringing it in.

Dry the outside — ports, buttons, speaker grilles — with a soft cloth, but don't use heat (hairdryers, radiators, ovens) to try to speed things up. Heat can do more damage than the water itself.

Don't insert or remove the SIM tray repeatedly, and don't shake the device — both can push moisture further into the internals rather than out.

Bring it in as soon as you reasonably can. Water damage gets worse with time as corrosion sets in on the internal components, so a phone assessed within a few hours has a meaningfully better chance than one left for several days.
